È questo, ha lasciato intendere il Pontefice, il contributo decisivo che il pen siero cristiano può offrire all’Oc cidente contemporaneo.

Every evening at 8 p.m., a bell rings atop the Curia of San Remo, a solemn reminder of the lives lost to abortion.
Installed on December 28, 2025—the Feast of the Holy Innocents— the “bell for unborn children” was initiated by Monsignor Antonio Suetta, bishop of Ven timiglia-San Remo.
The initi ative is both a spiritual call to prayer and a public statement against Italy’s Law 194, which regulates abortion.

In un testo firmato dal cardinale segretario di Stato Pietro Parolin, il Pontefi ce ha indicato con chiarezza che la pace, la giustizia e la prosperi tà non possono essere costruite prescindendo da verità condivise e da valori radicati nella tradizio ne cristiana.

Una difficoltà che, secondo il Papa, nasce dalla diffusione del relativismo e dalla tendenza a ridurre la verità a una semplice opinione soggettiva.
In questo contesto, ha sottolineato, la re ligione viene spesso relegata ai margini del dibattito pubblico, come se non avesse nulla da of frire al bene comune.
Suetta emphasizes that opposition to abortion transcends religious belief. “That abortion is homicide is not a question of faith; it is an incontrovertible fact,” he says.
Life begins at conception, he in sists, and no medical authority can deny it.
From this perspec tive, the state has no legitimate authority to decide over the lives of innocent, defenseless humans.
He calls for a recon sideration of laws that permit abortion, describing Law 194 as “unjust and inequitable.”
Il messaggio di Leone XIV si configura così come un appel lo a riscoprire le radici cristiane dell’Europa e dell’Occidente, non per nostalgia del passato, ma per ritrovare basi solide su cui co struire un futuro di pace autenti ca e duratura.

The bell serves primarily as a call to prayer: for unborn children, for mothers, and for all those involved in abortion, whom the Church calls to con version.
Suetta stresses that the initiative is not intended to condemn women but to help them recognize the weight of their choices and to open a path toward spiritual healing.
As he explains, a woman facing abortion often carries a heavy burden, sometimes without full awareness of it.
The bell, he says, can help her acknowledge this reality, fostering reflection and the possibility of renewal and liberation from guilt.
