The Dante Alighieri Society Sydney is promoting a 3 part series entitled ‘La Lingua Italiana e i Giovani’ which investigates different facets of Italian language learning in a contemporary context. The first instalment in the series was a beautifully presented talk that gave us an enthralling insight into the art of apologising through the lens of an Italian language learner as opposed to that of an Italian native. The brilliant and engaging Dr. Talia Walker took us through her findings as a researcher for The University of Sydney.
The second part of the series is an upcoming piece hosted by Dr Margherita Angelucci. Dr Angelucci is a Research Fellow for Monash University who has worked as an Editor and Translator and volunteered her services in the Italian, language and migration sectors. The content of this not to be missed forum covers the notion of how Hip Hop music is a way A New Way of Being Italian of being Italian for AfroItalian youths who may otherwise feel challenged by their sense of identity. Dr Angelucci proposes that Cultural practices like Hip Hop music offer alternative forms of belonging and identification that allow Afroitalian youth to articulate complex transcultural identities spanning beyond the two sides of being booth an Italian and an immigrant.
The ideas presented are sure to resonate with educators and the culturally displaced such as many immigrant Italians or second generation Italians. ‘A New Way Of Being Italian Through The Lens of Hip Hop’ will be held via Zoom Online Conferencing on the 19th August from 3.00pm to 5.00pm and will include the ability for participants to provide commentary or ask questions of the speaker.
