“Enough is enough”: We must deal with Hamas

In the heart of Tel Aviv, Italian attorney Sabina Mayer shared her thoughts on the recent turn of events that have rocked Israel, as well as her personal connection to the unfolding situation with Italian News Agency ANSA.

Sabina said that “concealing a monster behind walls is no longer tolerable, conceivable, or sustainable. In Israel, there is a palpable yearning to bring an end to it once and for all,” Mayer expressed. Her sentiment echoed the collective voice of a nation confronting a formidable adversary.

Residing in Tel Aviv for nearly three decades, Mayer has borne witness to a shocking shift in her adopted homeland. The events that unfolded on 7th October in the southern region of Israel have left an indelible mark on her.

Speaking with ANSA in her ninth-floor office within a skyscraper, adjacent to the Italian embassy, Mayer recounted her shock and immense sorrow when confronted with the harrowing imagery of the situation. “It was a terrible shock, an immense sorrow, to see those horrific images. The unthinkable had happened,” she said.

In the aftermath of that Saturday morning, life took an abrupt turn for Mayer as well. Her 27-year-old son, a graduate and professional in the high-tech sector, received a summons from the Israeli army that was both unexpected and profound. “My son had to leave his life behind in an instant,” Mayer remarked, speaking of the stress that every mother dreads enduring.

“The army comprises sons, husbands, brothers, and fathers, representing each one of us; it’s our extended family,” Mayer noted. Even her colleagues in the legal profession chose to trade their legal robes for military uniforms, underscoring the collective commitment to serving the nation.

The recent assault by Hamas on one of the military bases in southern Israel had a personal resonance for Mayer. It was the same base where her daughter, now a 24-year-old student, had completed her military service just four years ago. “If there was one place she considered safe, it was that one. She knew every corner of that base. This has caused her terrible anguish and grief for those who were involved,” Mayer revealed.

As Israel mounts a response to the threat it faces, a vigorous and decisive reaction is anticipated. “We expect a very tough response because we cannot live with a monster lurking behind the wall. No democratic or European nation would tolerate such a threat, given that it endangers the lives of every individual, particularly children,” Mayer declared. She believes that recent political unrest and protests in Israel may have misled the enemy into thinking that the country was divided, prompting the attack. However, she asserted that this act had the opposite effect, unifying the nation.

Mayer emphasised that many Israelis, who were initially hesitant about military intervention in Gaza, now unequivocally support decisive action against Hamas. “Finish it with Hamas. There is no other choice; this monster must cease to exist, along with those enabling and supporting it, as well as other similar threats to Israel,” she stated.

Addressing concerns for the civilian population in Gaza, Mayer assured that Israel harbours no intent to harm innocent civilians, particularly children and women. She made it clear that if Hamas hinders their escape to use them as human shields and if Egypt keeps its borders closed, regrettable casualties will be inevitable, with Hamas shouldering the responsibility.

The situation remains highly volatile, and there are no signs of an imminent resolution. Nevertheless, Mayer has resolved to stand her ground in Israel, stating, “My connection with Italy remains unshakeable,” even as she remains dedicated to her life in Tel Aviv, her family, and her responsibilities. “We all must contribute to our nation’s progress; Israel must march forward,” she concluded.
