Government Boost for Italian Language Abroad

The Italian government is set to significantly boost support for the teaching of Italian language and culture abroad, with new investments planned through 2027. This initiative, part of the proposed amendments to the 2026-2027 Budget Law currently under review in the Senate Budget Committee, responds to long-standing requests from Italian communities worldwide.

Under the proposal, an additional €500,000 per year will be allocated in 2026 and 2027 to support Italian language courses run by managing entities, organisations responsible for delivering classes to descendants of Italians and other language learners. These funds aim to ensure high-quality teaching and wider access to Italian courses globally.

In addition, €1 million per year will be dedicated to strengthening Italian schools abroad. This funding can be used for scholarships for young people with Italian citizenship or proven Italian ancestry, helping them maintain strong cultural and linguistic ties to Italy.

The government emphasises that the objective is to “strengthen Italian interests abroad” and expand support for Italian citizens living outside Italy. The amendments are part of broader measures in the budget that include initiatives in health, education, pediatric mobility, anti-obesity programs, and events against antisemitism.

By investing in language and culture, Italy seeks to foster connections with its global diaspora and ensure that future generations of Italians abroad remain closely linked to their heritage.
