The Italian Embassy in Canberra celebrated the 100th anniversary of the Aereonautica Militare, the Italian Air Force. Representatives from the Australian Defence Force and military attachés from 38 countries attended the event, which featured a seminar on the history, achievements, and future challenges of the Aereonautica Militare.
Col. Marco Bertoli delivered an informative and interesting presentation on the history of the Aereonautica Militare. He described how in 1923, Italy decided to establish an independent Air Force, which incorporated the existing air forces of the Army and Navy of the Kingdom of Italy. In the years following its establishment, the Aereonautica Militare grew in strength, placing great emphasis on the aviation industry and expanding its capabilities.
Over the past century, the Aereonautica Militare has made significant contributions to the defence of Italy and the promotion of democratic principles around the world. In recent years, its mission has evolved to meet the changing international landscape, with a focus on prevention and effective intervention when necessary.
The Air Force has a primary role in defending Italian airspace, preventing and neutralising threats from the sky. It also has diverse and balanced air instruments with specific projection capabilities, which can be integrated into inter-force or multinational contexts for conducting diverse and complex operations, both nationally and abroad.
In addition to its defence capabilities, the Air Force performs specific tasks in service to the community, such as medical transport and support to Civil Protection and the Ministries of the Interior and Foreign Affairs.
As the Aereonautica Militare looks to the future, it will continue to evolve and adapt to meet the challenges of the modern world, guided by the same founding values that inspired the first pioneers of the air. The celebration of its 100th anniversary is a reminder of the significant contributions that the Aereonautica Militare has made to the defence of Italy and the promotion of democratic principles over the past century.
