Tomorrow, Sunday 15 October, Brisbane’s Italian community is set to gather at Roma Street Parklands for a momentous celebration. It marks the 10th anniversary of the ‘Confluenza’ monument, a symbol of the enduring Italian influence on culture, cuisine, and community in Queensland. The event is not just a commemoration but a testament to the captivating blend of history and a promising future that Italian immigration has brought to this beautiful state.
The story of Italian immigration to Queensland is rich and multifaceted, beginning in the late 19th century. Italians have left an indelible mark on the cultural tapestry of this region. From the traditional piazzas to the bustling espresso bars, the Italian spirit thrives in Queensland.
Post-World War II, Italian immigrants played a pivotal role in Queensland’s growth. They significantly contributed to the state’s economy in sectors such as construction, mining, and agriculture. These industrious and dedicated individuals left their mark, helping to shape the Queensland we know today.
Today, a new generation of young Italians brings a renewed sense of vitality and innovation to Queensland’s rich heritage. These bright minds and energetic souls promise a vibrant and promising future. They are a testament to the enduring spirit of the Italian community in Brisbane.
The ‘Confluenza’ monument at Roma Street Parklands perfectly symbolises the fusion of traditions. It stands as a tribute to Italians, both past and present, who have enriched Queensland’s identity and legacy. It is a powerful reminder of the strength that comes from unity and shared aspirations.
This event is made possible through the tireless efforts of the Com.It.Es Queensland & Northern Territory, particularly the subcommittee led by Councillor Maria Cupo. Maria has taken over from the project’s initiator, Vito di Stasi, President of the Lucania Association of Queensland. They, along with countless others in the Italian community, are responsible for preserving and promoting Italian culture in this dynamic, multicultural city.
The picnic tomorrow runs from 2:00pm to 5:00pm and promises afternoon tea, a guest speaker on Italian migration, and the camaraderie that comes from shared traditions. It’s an opportunity for everyone in the community to come together, celebrating the wonderful blend of Italian and Australian cultures.
Participants can contribute a food platter to share, allowing everyone to showcase their favorite Italian ‘spuntino’ or ‘dolce’ and exchange culinary experiences with fellow attendees. Com.It.Es Queensland & Northern Territory will also provide tea and coffee for all, and people are welcome to bring their choice of alcoholic beverages.
The event’s gathering point will be at the Lakeside area, conveniently positioned near the BBQs, picnic tables, and restroom facilities. For added comfort, feel free to bring your own picnic blankets or a chair.
The organisers highly recommend using public transportation, as there is direct access from Roma Street train station. If you prefer to drive, paid parking is available onsite, along Albert/Wickham St, or at the King George Carpark.
So, Brisbane Italians and residents, make sure to mark your calendars, and join the Italian community at Roma Street Parklands tomorrow. The ‘Confluenza’ monument celebration not only commemorates the past but also signifies the bright future that this enduring Italian spirit brings to the vibrant tapestry of Queensland.
