Canterbury-Bankstown has embraced the flavours, sounds, and traditions of Italy with the launch of its much-anticipated “Let’s Go Italian” festival. Running from August through October, this vibrant cultural series, organised by the City’s libraries, promises to immerse the community in authentic Italian heritage through a variety of events designed for all ages.
The festival officially opened on 8 August with an energetic night of live music featuring an eight-piece band of some of Australia’s most beloved Italian entertainers. Attendees enjoyed classic Italian pizza and prosecco, setting a festive tone for the months ahead. Mayor Bilal El-Hayek highlighted the significance of the festival. “Let’s Go Italian celebrates the traditions, food, music and stories that make Italy such a special place,” he said. “It brings the best of world culture right here to Canterbury-Bankstown, without the need to travel.”
The festival’s program offers a range of exciting experiences. A highlight includes a stunning display of Ducati motorcycles at Bankstown Library on 8 and 9 August, showcasing the style and engineering brilliance behind this iconic Italian brand. Children and families will delight in gelato-making demonstrations held throughout the festival at various libraries, where hands-on activities and storytelling reveal the secrets behind Italy’s beloved frozen treat.
Later in the season, Giuseppe’s Butchery Masterclass at Campsie Library on 21 September will offer a rare chance to learn heritage techniques from Calabrese culinary traditions, complete with tastings. Literature lovers are in for a treat on 21 August when acclaimed author Melina Marchetta, creator of Looking for Alibrandi, joins journalist Sarah McDonald for an exclusive conversation.
