On Saturday, 14 October, the Sicilia Social & Sports Club Inc. in Adelaide hosted a night of grandeur and celebration at their annual Sicilia Night Gala Event. It was a resounding success, with a substantial number of newcomers and prominent dignitaries in attendance, making it a night to remember.
The Sicilia Social & Sports Club Inc., a prominent hub for Adelaide’s Sicilian community, opened its doors to the community for a night of all-Sicilian cuisine. The event showcased the rich culture and culinary traditions of Sicily, and it was an excellent opportunity for newcomers to experience the warmth and hospitality that the club is known for.
Among the distinguished guests were Dana Wortley MP, Member for Torrens; John Gardner MP, Deputy Leader of the Opposition; Hon. Russell Wortley MLC; and Jing Lee, MLC, representing South Australia. Their presence added a touch of prestige to the evening, reaffirming the importance of community and cultural events in Adelaide.
The evening’s entertainment was provided by the talented group “Friends,” who delighted the audience with their captivating performances, adding a touch of Sicilian charm to the night.
Rita Bianca Palumbo, the President of the Sicilia Social & Sports Club Inc. Adelaide, expressed her gratitude, saying, “It was a fantastic night, and thank you for joining us at our annual Sicilia Night Gala Event.” Her words reflected the club’s appreciation for the support it received from various quarters.
The event included a special recognition of two remarkable individuals. Rita and Grace, the kitchen coordinator, together with the untiring and resolute volunteer committee of the Sicilia Club were presented with beautiful flowers in appreciation of their dedication and hard work.
Sicilian of the Year 2023 was awarded to Bill and Sebastian Galipo of Galipo Foods for their consistent support of the Sicilia Social & Sports Club Inc. Adelaide, highlighting the strong bonds that exist within the community.
The Hon. Dana Worthley MP, representing the Premier, the Hon. Peter Malinauskas MP, and the Hon. John Gardner MP, Deputy Leader of the Opposition, representing the Leader of the Opposition, the Hon. David Spiers MP, both acknowledged the importance of cultural events like Sicilia Night in fostering unity and inclusivity in the community.
Giovanni Segre, the Italian Vice Consul of Adelaide, and Marinella Marmo of Com.It.Es. were also present, underscoring the importance of such events in promoting cultural exchange and fostering strong ties between Italy and the Italian community in Adelaide.
Adriana Christopoulos, Chair of SAMEAC (South Australia’s Multicultural and Ethnic Affairs Commission), also graced the event, emphasising the significance of multicultural events in promoting diversity and cultural enrichment.
Sicilia Night Gala Event 2023 was a resounding success, combining delicious Sicilian cuisine, captivating entertainment, and a sense of community that underscores the importance of preserving and celebrating cultural heritage.
