The two universities aim to promote mutual interests in the areas of scientific research and training. The University of Naples Parthenope was established in 1919 as an institute of higher education known as the Royal Naval Institute.

This institute was meant to tackle, assess and evaluate the economics issues related to the sea, pursuing scientific developments. In 1999, the two long-standing Faculties of Economics and Nautical Science were merged with another three newly established Faculties teaching Law, Engineering and Sport Science and the Institute officially became the University of Naples Parthenope.

As part of the MoU, a Parthenope graduate student can spend a period of study at the University of Wollongong.

The University of Wollongong is among the most prestigious universities in the world, ranking 6th in “The Impact” world ranking, measuring the social and economic impact of universities in pursuing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted in 2015 by the United Nations (UN 2030 Agenda).
