Sydney lockdown was avoidable

Anne Stanley, Member for Werriwa, says the Sydney lockdown, and subsequent lockdown’s in most Australian states and territories, could have been avoided.

For over a year, Federal Labor have called on the Morrison Government to build a national quarantine system and to secure enough vaccines.

The Morrison Government ignored the pleas from the Opposition, and almost a year later, Sydney is still facing lockdown woes.

“If the Prime Minister guaranteed national quarantine at the beginning of the Pandemic, Sydney may not be in a two-week lockdown.

“Purpose-built quarantine is much more effective than hotels made for tourists.

“The Sydney lockdown would also have been avoided if the Morrison Government did not mishandle the vaccine rollout.

“Global best practice in securing vaccines is to not put all your eggs in one basket. And that’s exactly what the Prime Minister did. Less than 5% of Australians are vaccinated because of this reason.

“The leaks from hotel quarantine have forced this lockdown, but they aren’t the catalyst.

“The Morrison Government needed to vaccinate the population quickly and efficiently and provide an effective quarantine system. And they have failed to deliver.
