Frank Lotito’s Italian Divorce

di Alberto Macchione

“The Italian Divorce” is a new play from the legendary award winning Writer, Director and Stand Up Comedian, Frank Lotito! From Marriage Breakdown to Family Meltdown, this heartwarming new comedy about Love, Guilt, and discovering that some prisons come with home-cooked meals and unconditional Judgment, is set to play in Williamstown Victoria in August.

The tag line “You can leave your wife… but you can never leave the family” has punters already chomping at the bit for tickets. The Italian Divorce is described as a laugh-out-loud, tear-a-little comedy that dives headfirst into the madness of culture, love, and the kind of family you can’t return to sender.

When 36-year-old Pino gets kicked out by his wife, he does what any self-respecting Italian man would do—he moves back in with his parents, who happen to live next door…And yes, his mum back to ironing his underwear.

What was meant to be a short break from his wife quickly turns into a full-blown family fiasco. His overbearing mother is already planning his next wedding, his father dishes out advice from 1972, and his fiercely independent sister urges him to flee the country.

Meanwhile, his wife wants him to grow a spine and cut the apron strings, and Dimitri, the Greek neighbor, keeps turning up with ouzo and unsolicited wisdom.

It’s a household bubbling over with laughs, lashings of lasagna, and just enough

dysfunction to make you feel better about your own family. And yes — Mamma has already posted all the details on Facebook. The Italian Divorce is a hilarious yet heartfelt celebration of Italian-Australian family life that explores universal themes of love, identity, and letting go (or at least trying to).

It proves that some family ties are unbreakable — whether you want them or not.

“This show is about the people who raised us and the rules they never stopped enforcing,” says Italo Australian writer-director Frank Lotito. “It’s for anyone who’s ever tried to untangle  themselves from their parents’ expectations — and ended up with a bowl of pasta and more questions than answers.”

Perfect for fans of classic “Ethnic comedy” with a modern twist, The Italian Divorce invites audiences to laugh, cry, and maybe call their mum on the way home.

The cast features movie star and internationally acclaimed film director Frank Lotito (Big Mamma’s Boy, Wog Boys Forever) opposite Prison Break’s Steve Mouzakis and The Wedding’ Rosanna Morales.

The Italian Divorce will play live at Williamstown Italian Social Club, 30 Garden Street, Williamstown, Victoria.
