Well-Earned Break

This is the final issue of 2025. By the end of 2024, it was already clear the year ahead would be a tough one. That proved to be the case. So the first thing we want to say is thank you: to our readers for your steady support and for the trust you place in us week after week. That trust is what makes this work worthwhile.

Our pages are not driven by ready-made ideologies or private interests passed down by inheritance. Allora! is built on daily effort, genuine passion and, at times, choices that go against the grain. Independence is never cheap, but it is the only honest way to practise journalism without strings attached.

With this issue, we mark nine years of publication. Allora! began in 2016 with modest aims: a practical leaflet for pensioners, sharing news about patronato services. Nothing flashy, just useful information. Today, we are recognised as a key outlet for Italian-language news.

Pluralism, however, is not always well understood. There is still some discomfort to move beyond a “one-paper” mindset.

There is also room for self-reflection. As an Italian community in Australia, we have not always been alert enough to antisemitic sentiments. Some “pro-Pal” voices from among the Italian community have openly supported the intifada against Israel, helping create a climate of tension and backlash against the Jewish community.

Even more concerning was the portrayal of Hamas, in an Italian-language monthly published in Adelaide, as an “authentic and vital representative”. This is a line that must be clearly drawn and firmly rejected.

As for us at Allora!, we’ve earned a short break, while already preparing for what comes next, an even harder task ahead. We are confident that from the end of January or so, the Allora! will move to a twice-weekly schedule, published every Monday and Thursday.

To our readers, advertisers, partners and supporters, therefore, once again, best wishes and we look forward to see you in the New Year.
