“The commitment of the Puglia Region to host the Mediterranean Games is unwavering.” President Michele Emiliano, speaking at the “Taranto and the legacy of three thousand years of history: from Magna Graecia to the Mediterranean Games of 2026” conference held at Fiera del Levante, reiterated this dedication.
Emiliano highlighted the need for the government commissioner to disburse the 150 million euros, which Parliament earmarked in January 2022 but has not yet allocated to the Municipalities responsible for adapting the necessary sports facilities for this complex Olympic event.
Emiliano highlighted that the Puglia Region has already invested substantial resources in event planning and the design of key sports facilities through Asset. He expressed the Region’s readiness to provide additional funds for project implementation, drawing resources from the Fund of Development and Cohesion, pending approval from Minister Fitto. Additionally, even for current expenses, the Region stands prepared to contribute its share towards organising the Games, while expressing concerns about the government’s stance that the FSC funds cannot be used for current expenditures, a departure from past practices.
Emiliano acknowledged that events of this nature often become subjects of political debate but stressed that responsibility lies with all stakeholders to fulfill their duties promptly.
In a surprising twist, the Italian Government has decided to withdraw from its involvement in the organisation of the Mediterranean Games scheduled for June 2026. The announcement, conveyed through a letter sent by Minister of Sport Andrea Abodi, marks the second significant departure from the organising committee in less than two months, following the exit of CONI (Italian National Olympic Committee). The Government’s decision raises questions about the event’s future. This development, occurring during an advanced stage of preparations, is poised to have a considerable impact on the planning and execution of the 2026 Mediterranean Games.
