Nestled in the heart of Melbourne, the Royal Botanic Gardens offers a breathtaking 38-hectare oasis of natural beauty and biodiversity. Home to more than 8,500 plant species sourced from across the globe, the Gardens are a premier destination for visitors seeking both tranquillity and discovery.
Themed landscapes invite exploration—from the lush, shaded paths of Fern Gully, which evokes a serene rainforest environment, to the Arid Garden, where drought-tolerant cacti and succulents thrive. Atop Guilfoyle’s Volcano, a striking historic reservoir encircled by vibrant succulents, visitors are rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding grounds.
Wildlife is also a key feature of the Gardens, particularly around the Ornamental Lake, where swans, cormorants, and other waterbirds are frequently seen. For those eager to learn more, the “Secret Life of Birds” guided walk provides a closer look at the avian species that inhabit the area.
Families are well catered for with the Ian Potter Foundation Children’s Garden, designed to foster hands-on interaction with nature. Activities such as the “Seek and Find Nature Cards” provide an engaging experience for younger visitors.
Educational opportunities abound, with programs tailored for all age groups—from early learning excursions to primary school workshops—focusing on environmental awareness and First Nations knowledge. The Aboriginal Heritage Walk offers a powerful cultural experience, exploring the traditional uses of native plants and the connection between Country and community.
Art lovers can take part in the Gardens’ renowned botanical art program, the largest of its kind in Australia. Classes and workshops, often led by celebrated artists, explore the intersection of nature and creativity.
Health and well-being are also central to the Gardens’ mission. Forest Therapy sessions, inspired by the Japanese practice of Shinrin-yoku, invite participants to slow down and reconnect with the natural world. Citizen science is promoted through the ClimateWatch Walk, which monitors local biodiversity and the effects of climate change. Meanwhile, “Sonica Botanica” offers an immersive audio journey, blending storytelling and environmental sounds to deepen visitors’ connection to the landscape.
The Gardens are open daily, with free admission. Opening hours are from 7:30 am to 7:30 pm during daylight saving time, and until 5:30 pm in winter. Refreshments are available at on-site cafés, including Jardin Tan and The Terrace Café. The Gardens are accessible and welcoming to visitors of all ages.
