Italian MP accused of “creeping Anti-Semitism” in debate over Israel and Palestine

Democratic Party (PD) MP Laura Boldrini has been accused of endorsing “creeping anti-Semitism.” Brothers of Italy (FdI) Member of Parliament, Giovanni Donzelli, has ignited a heated debate by claiming that Boldrini has allegedly provided institutional legitimacy to individuals who funded the Palestinian militant group Hamas, questioned Israel’s right to self-defence, and seemingly prioritised the rights of all peoples except for Israel, following the recent Hamas attack on the country.

In a session of the Italian House of Representatives, Donzelli voiced his concerns about the alleged connections between Italian lawmakers and a person reportedly involved in financing Hamas and other terrorists, citing intelligence sources from the Western world. Among the lawmakers who have had official photographs taken with this individual is Laura Boldrini, which Donzelli found to be a serious matter.

Donzelli expressed his unease about the affiliations, saying, “I wanted to clarify a few things regarding some statements that preceded my turn on a television debate. I am pleased that some PD members watch me on TV in the evenings. However, there is a serious problem: some MPs have had institutional relations with an individual who, according to Western intelligence, finances Hamas and terrorists. Among the individuals who have taken official photographs with this individual is MP Laura Boldrini. I consider this a grave matter.” His comments were met with protests from opposition members in the House.

Donzelli went on to explain that he did not support his party’s group in their vote in favour of a motion presented by the PD, Five Star Movement (M5S), and Alliance for Sustainability (Avs) because it appeared ambiguous concerning responsibilities, seemingly equating “terrorists and Israel.”

He continued, “At this time, anyone who deems to deny Israel’s right to exist and defend itself but continues to believe that all other peoples have this right except for Israel leaves the doubt that behind this defence of Palestine, there is a new and creeping anti-Semitism.”

Donzelli’s statements ignited strong reactions from members of the opposition. Nicola Fratoianni, leader of Sinistra Italiana (Italian Left), criticised Donzelli for his remarks, describing them as “intentional hooliganism” and suggesting that he should be ashamed. Fratoianni also reminded Donzelli of a previous incident in which he accused parliamentarians of complicity with terrorists early in the legislative term but did not succeed.

The accusations and ensuing debate underscore the complexities and tensions surrounding the Israel-Palestine issue, both in Italy and on the international stage. The Italian political landscape remains divided over how to navigate this sensitive and long-standing conflict, with strong opinions on all sides.
