A significant step forward in Leonardo da Vinci studies has been achieved through digital innovation. The Museo Galileo and the Veneranda Biblioteca Ambrosiana have strengthened their long-standing collaboration with the launch of Leonardo//thek@ 2.0, a groundbreaking platform that transforms access to Leonardo’s manuscripts while virtually restoring their original unity.
Leonardo//thek@ is an advanced digital library designed to guide users through the artist’s sketches, notes and scientific studies using sophisticated search tools. The original version already allowed scholars and enthusiasts to explore the nearly 1,200 folios of the Codex Atlanticus, complete with transcriptions, critical commentary and links to related manuscripts.
With version 2.0, however, the project takes a major leap forward. Thanks to a collaboration with the Royal Collection Trust, the platform now includes the precious Leonardo folios preserved at the Royal Library in Windsor.
For the first time, users can consult together two of Leonardo’s most important documentary collections, separated since the end of the sixteenth century. Researchers can navigate both archives individually or simultaneously, carrying out searches based on themes, chronology, graphic elements and textual parallels.
The platform is also continuously updated with new scientific findings and material analyses, turning it into a genuine digital laboratory for scholars worldwide.
Leonardo//thek@ 2.0 represents a watershed moment in Leonardo studies. Beyond providing unprecedented global access to invaluable documents, it introduces a new way of reading and interpreting the genius of Leonardo da Vinci by digitally reuniting materials that history had long kept apart.
This innovative project not only preserves Leonardo’s legacy for future generations but also demonstrates how technology can bridge centuries of separation, offering fresh insights into one of humanity’s greatest creative minds
