Sydney Airport passengers warned of security delays as airlines offer flight changes

Passengers departing Sydney Airport today, Friday 16 October, are being urged to allow extra time for security screening, with industrial action scheduled during the morning and evening travel periods.

Some employees of Certis, the airport’s security screening provider, are scheduled to stop work between 6am and 10am, and again from 5pm to 9pm AEDT. Virgin Australia says screening will remain open but could operate at reduced capacity. Virgin Australia

Airline warnings cover international and domestic departures. Jetstar has alerted passengers travelling through terminals T1 and T2, while Qantas has warned of longer security queues affecting its Sydney departures. Travellers should follow their airline’s instructions and check their flight status before leaving home. Jetstar, Qantas

Virgin is allowing passengers booked to depart Sydney today to move to Saturday 17 October, subject to availability. On Virgin-operated domestic and international services, both the change fee and fare difference are waived when passengers retain the same fare type. For partner-operated international services sold by Virgin, the change fee is waived but any fare difference remains payable.

Changes must be made at least 60 minutes before a Virgin-operated flight’s scheduled departure, or three hours before a partner-operated international departure. Passengers should contact Virgin or their original travel agent. Virgin Australia

Qantas is also offering fee-free changes on eligible bookings made before 16 October. Replacement flights must retain the same route and cabin, and fare differences may apply. Travellers should check the conditions attached to their booking rather than assume every ticket qualifies. Qantas

As of 7.08am AEDT, the official advisories reviewed still described the action as planned. They did not independently confirm that the stoppage had begun or identify resulting flight cancellations.
