SYDNEY — A female police officer has died after a marked police vehicle crashed into a tree in Sydney’s inner west early Friday morning.
The police vehicle was travelling north along Gibbons Street in Redfern, with lights and sirens activated while responding to an incident, when it crashed at about 1:30am.
NSW Police said the female constable, who was travelling in the passenger seat, died at the scene.
A male constable, believed to have been driving the vehicle, was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in a stable condition.
Police have established a crime scene and declared the crash a critical incident, with specialist investigators examining the circumstances surrounding the collision.
Regent Street remains closed in both directions between Lawson Street and Cleveland Street in Redfern, while several bus services have been diverted.
Motorists are being urged to avoid the area and use alternative routes, with authorities warning that investigations are expected to continue for some time.
The circumstances leading to the crash remain under investigation.
