Does NSW have a Liberal Government under the leadership of a Catholic Premier? Obviously not! Standing Order 34 of the NSW Legislative Council reads: ‘The House will not meet unless a Minister is present in the House.’
According to ABC it was ‘the government’ which requested ‘for the house to sit past its mandate 12am shutdown’, despite minor parties objecting to this proposal, therefore allowing the bill to pass.
In essence, the delivery of this shameful piece of law bears as its mother a self-declared conservative government, headed by a ‘supposedly’ Catholic Premier.
Dominic Perrottet, a weak political leader, was unable to make a captain’s call and block the most far-reaching legislation on euthansia in the whole of Australia. The Premier could have used standing order 34 to prevent a debate and bring the upper house to postpone the bill by not sending one of its ministers in the chamber.
Archbishop Anthony Fisher described the passing of the Voluntary Assisted Dying Bill 2021 as “truly a dark day for New South Wales”.
The news dying laws will become operational across the state in 18 months after the Act commences, leading to voluntary and doctor-assisted suicides in healthcare and aged care facilities.
As even the most ‘common sense’ amendments were turned down, NSW’s euthanasia legislatilon now forces aged care facilities run by Catholic and other organisations opposing euthanasia to allow killing practices to take place in their facilities.
“If a civilisation is to be judged by how it treats its weakest members, the NSW parliament has failed miserably, and has set a dark and dangerous path for all posterity, determining a new and disturbing definition of what it means to be human,” Archbishop Fisher added.
The mastermind behind this awful piece of law is an independent MP, Alex Greenwich who holds the balance of power in the NSW lower house for what could be properly termed a failed Liberal-National government on ‘therapeutic obstinacy’.
Months ago, NSW Treasurer Matt Kean announced his support for voluntary assisted dying despite his ‘strong Catholic faith’. He told the Parliament that he was grateful to Premier Dominic Perrottet for “his leadership in allowing this legislation to be considered, knowing he genuinely and passionately opposes it”.
Sadly, while in the United States Nancy Pelosi is being denied access to Holy Communion for her support of abortion, nothing is being done to make a point of ‘catholic’ politicians who defy on a daily basis their own beliefs and those of many who have elected them.
