Glue Store Closes All Remaining Stores After $8.4 Million Loss

Australian fashion retailer Glue Store has officially shut down all of its remaining stores and ceased online operations, bringing an end to a brand that was once a major player in the country’s youth fashion market.

The closure follows a difficult financial period for the retailer, which posted an $8.4 million loss and struggled to maintain profitability despite a series of restructuring efforts.

Customers visiting the company’s website were greeted with a farewell message confirming the permanent closure.

“After many years of bringing you the styles you love, Glue Store has permanently closed – both in store and online,” the statement read.

“We are so grateful for your loyalty and support over the years.”

Accent Group Pulls the Plug

Glue Store’s parent company, Accent Group, decided to shut the remaining 16 stores across Australia as part of a broader strategy to focus on international growth brands and more profitable retail operations.

The company did not disclose how many employees would be affected by the closures.

At its peak, Glue Store operated more than 30 locations nationwide, becoming a popular destination for younger shoppers seeking streetwear, footwear and contemporary fashion brands.

Accent Group acquired Glue Store from UK-based JD Sports Fashion in 2021 for approximately $13 million.

Years of Decline

The retailer’s decline has been gradual.

In 2024, Accent Group closed 17 underperforming stores, citing poor returns and challenging retail conditions.

The company also exited the New Zealand market shortly after launching there in 2022.

Despite attempts to streamline operations, Glue Store continued to struggle amid changing consumer spending habits, rising operating costs and intense competition within the fashion sector.

Focus Shifts to Global Brands

Accent Group announced earlier this year that it would concentrate future investment on international brands with stronger growth potential.

The retailer believes these brands offer greater opportunities for expansion in Australia’s competitive retail market.

Another Casualty of Retail Pressures

Glue Store’s closure highlights the ongoing challenges facing fashion retailers across Australia as consumers become more cautious with discretionary spending amid cost-of-living pressures.

The shutdown marks the end of a brand that helped shape Australia’s youth fashion scene for decades, leaving many loyal customers nostalgic for a retailer that once played a significant role in the country’s streetwear culture.

For Australia’s retail sector, Glue Store’s collapse serves as another reminder of how rapidly consumer preferences and market conditions can change.
