The Ambassador of Italy to Australia, Nicola Lener, accompanied by his wife and Consul General Maurizio Mauri, attended the inauguration of “Art through Racing” in Melbourne, a cultural initiative celebrating the intersection of motorsport and contemporary art.
The exhibition showcases significant photographs from John Toscano’s private collection, reflecting his four-decade passion for Formula One and his long-standing presence at the Australian Grand Prix. Toscano’s archive captures some of the sport’s most iconic moments, documenting the evolution of racing in Australia and the global impact of the event.
Complementing these images, acclaimed portrait artist Vincent Fantauzzo presents a series of works exploring themes of speed, precision and automotive excellence. As part of their collaboration, Toscano provided Fantauzzo with a curated selection of historic photographs taken at the Australian Grand Prix over the past 40 years. These images have inspired a large-scale artwork by Fantauzzo, set to be unveiled in the Chairman’s Lounge during the 2026 Grand Prix in Melbourne.
The initiative stands as a vivid example of how Italian descendants have contributed to — and continue to influence — Australia’s cultural landscape. Blending diplomacy, heritage and artistic expression, “Art through Racing” highlights the enduring ties between Italy and Australia through a shared passion for creativity and sport.
