A 16-year-old boy has been charged following the alleged attack in Karawatha. The 17-year-old victim was initially taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries

A 17-year-old student who was allegedly stabbed at the Islamic College of Brisbane is now reported to be in a stable condition in intensive care.

The teenager was rushed to Princess Alexandra Hospital after emergency services were called to the school in Karawatha shortly before midday on Tuesday, July 14. He had initially suffered injuries described as potentially life-threatening.

Alleged altercation in the school courtyard

Police allege the 17-year-old and a 16-year-old boy were involved in an altercation in the school courtyard at about 11.45am.

During the confrontation, the older teenager was allegedly stabbed multiple times with a knife.

Paramedics treated him at the scene before transporting him urgently to hospital.

Sixteen-year-old arrested at Stretton

The alleged attacker, who was known to the injured student, is accused of leaving the school on foot before police arrived.

Following inquiries, officers located him a short time later inside a vehicle on Gowan Road at Stretton.

The boy was arrested and taken into police custody.

Charges laid

The 16-year-old has been charged with one count of acts intended to maim, disfigure or disable, as well as unlawful possession of a weapon.

He is due to appear before the Richlands Children’s Court on Wednesday, July 15. The allegations have not been proven and the teenager is entitled to the presumption of innocence.

School placed into lockdown

The Islamic College of Brisbane was placed into lockdown during the emergency as police and paramedics responded.

Students were later dismissed early as a precaution, with families informed there was no continuing threat to the school community.

The college said the safety and wellbeing of students and staff remained its highest priority and asked the public to respect the privacy of the minors involved.

Investigation continues

Police are continuing to investigate the events leading up to the alleged stabbing and the precise circumstances of the confrontation.

Authorities have also appealed for anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage recorded in the Karawatha and Stretton areas around the time of the incident to contact police.

The improvement in the victim’s condition offers some relief to the school community after several hours of serious concern, while attention now turns to the police investigation and the accused teenager’s first court appearance.
