The selfless contributions of local community champions took centre stage at the 2026 NSW Volunteer of the Year Awards for the Northern Sydney area.
Attended by several regional mayors, the prestigious event highlighted the vital social fabric woven by individuals and groups who dedicate their time to making local council areas stronger and more inclusive. Among the standout recognitions was the accepted nomination for the Italian Language and Culture Group, an initiative praised for bridging heritage gaps and keeping vital traditions alive.
The group’s nomination was officially accepted by Liliana Pezzutti, who emphasised the deep community bonds the program fosters.
“This acceptance belongs to our entire community,” Pezzutti stated during the proceedings. “The group creates deep cultural connections that unite us across generations. Preserving the Italian language and cultural heritage is a labour of love, and being recognised here reinforces just how important connection and cultural identity are to the wider Northern Sydney region.”
Highlighting the structural impact of the group, organiser Alberto Macchione reflected on the broader social benefits of its work.
“At a time of fracturing social cohesion, the group provides important social connections and community engagement,” Macchione noted. “We offer a safe, welcoming space where people can find a true sense of belonging.”
The City of Ryde was heavily represented at the ceremony, showcasing a diverse network of community service. City of Ryde Mayor Trenton Brown attended to support local nominees and underscore the council’s ongoing commitment to its community volunteers.
“The 2026 Volunteer Recognition Awards celebrate those many selfless people who freely give their time, skills and expertise while asking for nothing in return,” Mayor Brown noted. “This Council greatly appreciates all the extra help that makes the City of Ryde the place for lifestyle and opportunity at your doorstep.”
Run by The Centre for Volunteering, the regional ceremonies serve as a crucial stepping stone towards the upcoming State Gala Ceremony in December. The afternoon closed with a collective round of applause for the hundreds of nominees who continue to power Northern Sydney’s community programs, emergency services and cultural preservation initiatives.
Their dedication continues to inspire stronger communities, meaningful connections and a lasting spirit of volunteerism. For many participants, the ceremony also offered an opportunity to celebrate the friendships, shared values and partnerships built through years of service.
