The Matildas are battling to stay in contention against Germany in their international friendly at Wildpark Stadium in Karlsruhe, with the hosts leading 2-1 at half-time.

Australia started brightly, with Ellie Carpenter creating an early opportunity for Sam Kerr. However, Germany gradually took control, exploiting gaps in the Australian defence.

Melissa Kössler opened the scoring in the 24th minute following a cross from Carlotta Wamser. Just six minutes later, Kössler struck again, weaving through Australia’s defence before beating goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold.

The Matildas struggled to maintain possession as Germany dominated the midfield.

Sam Kerr Gives Australia Hope

Australia suffered a scare in the 39th minute when captain Sam Kerr went down after receiving a blow to her right ankle.

Despite appearing uncomfortable, the Chelsea striker returned to the field and delivered a vital goal just before half-time.

Ellie Carpenter produced an excellent run down the wing and sent a dangerous cross into the penalty area, where Kerr finished with a header to reduce Germany’s advantage.

The goal gave Australia renewed confidence heading into the break.

Montemurro Faces a Tough Test

Head coach Joe Montemurro is using the international window to assess his squad ahead of the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

Australia is without several influential players, including Mary Fowler, Kyra Cooney-Cross and Katrina Gorry.

The absences have created opportunities for emerging talents, while experienced stars such as Kerr, Caitlin Foord and Steph Catley remain central to the team’s performance.

Germany’s attacking quality has exposed defensive weaknesses, giving Montemurro plenty to assess.

Australia will next face Haiti in France as preparations for the World Cup continue.

With Germany leading 2-1 at half-time, Kerr’s goal has kept the Matildas in the contest and given them renewed hope of a comeback.
