Hanging by a Threat Captivates Young Crowd

In the sunshine state, Italian culture took centre stage this week as an award-winning puppet performance brought a touch of Italian artistry to young audiences in Brisbane.

The show, “Hanging by a Thread” (“Appeso a un filo”), is the creation of the renowned Di Filippo Marionette, whose work has earned international acclaim even among Italians abroad for blending traditional craftsmanship with contemporary storytelling.

This marked the production’s first stop in Brisbane, offering a rare opportunity for local audiences to experience a distinctive form of Italian cultural expression. Performed by the talented duo Rhoda Di Filippo and Remo Di Filippo, the show transported spectators into a whimsical universe where finely crafted marionettes seemed to breathe with life. Through a seamless fusion of movement, music and song, the performance highlighted not only technical mastery but also the enduring charm of handmade theatre.

The audience at St Anthony’s Primary School responded with enthusiasm. Children watched in awe as the puppets danced and interacted, while adults found themselves equally captivated by the emotional depth and artistry on display. The performance managed to bridge generations, proving that traditional puppetry still holds a powerful place in modern cultural life.

Beyond entertainment, the event also served a broader purpose: promoting Italian language and heritage abroad. By combining storytelling with linguistic elements, the show introduced young viewers to Italian culture in an engaging and accessible way.

The initiative was made possible with the support of Com.It.Es, whose contribution was acknowledged as instrumental in bringing the performance to the local community. Their involvement underscores the importance of collaborative cultural efforts in strengthening ties between Italy and its diaspora communities across Australia.

As the troupe continues its tour, this Brisbane debut stands as a vivid reminder of how cultural diplomacy can inspire, educate and connect communities—one thread at a time.
