A strong earthquake struck southern Peru, causing panic, injuries and structural damage in the Ica region.
According to local authorities and the Geophysical Institute of Peru, the quake measured between 5.8 and 6.1 in magnitude and was also strongly felt in the capital, Lima.
The epicentre was located near Pampa de Tate, about 41 kilometres from the city of Ica, at a depth of more than 60 kilometres. Authorities confirmed at least 27 people were injured, while several public buildings suffered damage.
Among the affected structures was the San Luis Gonzaga University, while landslides were also reported in nearby areas of Huancavelica. Videos circulating on local media showed residents running into the streets, damaged buildings and emergency evacuations.
Peruvian Defence Minister Amadeo Flores visited the affected areas and said emergency services were responding quickly. Authorities are continuing to assess the full extent of the damage as aftershocks remain possible.
