The announcement was made through an email sent to members and loyal customers, confirming that the decision had not been taken lightly.
“This decision has not been made lightly,” a company spokesperson said. “We understand that Lincraft holds a special place in the hearts of many customers, and we know this news will be disappointing for those who have shared our love of creativity, crafting, sewing, knitting and home projects.”
The company stressed that stores will not close immediately. Instead, the shutdown process will occur progressively over the coming months, allowing customers time to continue shopping and complete their ongoing projects.
Importantly, Lincraft confirmed that its online business will remain operational throughout the transition, enabling customers to continue purchasing products even as physical stores begin to disappear from shopping centres and retail precincts.
For generations of Australians and New Zealanders, Lincraft has been more than just a retail chain. Since its founding more than 80 years ago, the company has become synonymous with fabrics, yarns, haberdashery, home décor materials and creative hobbies.
The closure comes at a challenging time for the retail sector. Rising operating costs, changing consumer habits, increased online competition and ongoing economic pressures have placed significant strain on many traditional retailers across Australia.
While the company has not publicly detailed the financial reasons behind the decision, industry observers note that many long-established retail brands have struggled to adapt to a rapidly changing marketplace dominated by e-commerce and shifting consumer spending patterns.
In its farewell message, Lincraft thanked customers for decades of loyalty and support.
“On behalf of everyone who has been part of the Lincraft family over the past eight decades, thank you. Thank you for your loyalty, your friendship, your creativity, and for allowing us to be part of your homes, your families, and your lives,” the statement said.
“You have helped make Lincraft what it is, and we will always be proud of the role we have played in inspiring creativity across Australia and New Zealand.”
For many customers, the announcement represents the end of an era. Countless sewing projects, knitting creations, school assignments, family traditions and craft hobbies have been supported by Lincraft products over the years.
Although the stores may soon disappear from Australia’s retail landscape, the company’s legacy as a champion of creativity and craftsmanship is likely to endure for generations to come.
