A 27-year-old woman killed after a Tesla crossed a pedestrian area and crashed into a café at Westfield Knox in Melbourne’s east has been identified as Jennifer Keen. Friends and colleagues have remembered her as a “bubbly”, kind young woman who loved life and had a passion for anime.
The fatal crash happened on Monday at Westfield Knox in Wantirna South, while Jennifer was on her lunch break from a call centre where she worked about 100 metres away.
According to reports, the Tesla struck Jennifer before crashing into the outdoor dining area of Martini+Co.
Bystanders and paramedics desperately tried to revive her, but she died at the scene.
Friends remember a “kind soul”
Jennifer’s friends and colleagues have paid tribute to the young woman, describing her as cheerful, warm and caring.
One colleague, Olivia, said Jennifer was “just the sweetest person” and should be remembered as someone who was happy to be alive.
She was also known among friends for her love of anime.
Two others injured
Two other people were injured in the crash but did not require hospital treatment.
The driver, a 55-year-old woman, was taken to hospital with minor injuries and is assisting police with their investigation.
Police investigate what caused the crash
Detectives from Victoria Police’s Major Collision Investigation Unit are investigating.
Police currently believe the crash was accidental and are focusing on why the vehicle failed to give way at the pedestrian crossing before veering into the café area.
Shoppers and staff who witnessed the incident have been interviewed.
The investigation remains ongoing and no final conclusion has yet been reached about the cause.
Café closed until further notice
Martini+Co has confirmed it will remain closed until further notice following the tragedy.
What began as an ordinary lunch break ended in a devastating loss for Jennifer’s family, friends and colleagues.
