Police Chief Fady Dagher calls the attack “a tragedy” and “a nightmare.” A female officer who was critically injured is now in stable condition, while the emergency alert has been lifted
MONTREAL – Three people have died following a shooting in Montreal’s Côte-des-Neiges neighbourhood. The victims include a police officer, a civilian and the suspected gunman. A second officer, a woman who was initially listed in critical condition, is now stable.
Montreal police were called to 6939 Décarie Boulevard, near the Hilton Garden Inn, following reports of an armed and dangerous individual. According to authorities, officers came under fire when they arrived at the scene. Police believe the suspect acted alone.
Montreal Police Chief Fady Dagher confirmed that the immediate threat had been neutralized and that the suspect was dead.
“It is a tragedy. It is a nightmare,” Dagher told reporters, expressing admiration and support for officers who put their lives at risk while carrying out their duties.
The weapon believed to have been used by the suspect was recovered and seized at the scene. The motive behind the attack remains unknown, and investigators are continuing their work to reconstruct the exact sequence of events.
Authorities had earlier issued an emergency alert, warning residents to remain indoors, lock doors and windows and avoid the area. The alert and shelter-in-place order were later lifted after police confirmed that there was no longer an immediate threat to the public.
The death of the officer marks a particularly tragic moment for Montreal police. It had been 24 years since an SPVM officer was last killed in the line of duty. Benoît L’Ecuyer, 29, was fatally shot on February 28, 2002, while pursuing a speeding vehicle.
