Online threat against Modi ahead of Melbourne visit: young person formally warned by Australian Federal Police

The Australian Federal Police has formally warned a young person over an online threat directed at Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is due to visit Melbourne this week for talks with Anthony Albanese and a major community event at Marvel Stadium.

Threat identified before Modi’s arrival

Australian authorities have moved quickly after an online threat was made against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modiahead of his official visit to Melbourne.

The Australian Federal Police confirmed that the source of the threat was identified and spoken to on July 3. Following an assessment of the matter, the young person involved was issued with a formal warning.

Police said there is currently no immediate or impending risk to the community.

AFP says threats are taken seriously

The AFP said any suspected criminal behaviour, including threats and harassment, is taken seriously and will be investigated.

The warning comes as security preparations continue for Modi’s visit, which is expected to attract significant public attention.

The Indian prime minister is due to meet Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese for the annual leaders’ summit and attend a large community event at Marvel Stadium, where thousands of members of the Indian diaspora are expected.

Melbourne at the centre of Australia-India diplomacy

Modi’s visit comes at a key moment in the relationship between Australia and India.

Canberra increasingly sees New Delhi as a crucial partner in the Indo-Pacific, with cooperation expanding across defence, trade, technology, energy, education and regional security.

Albanese has described the Australia-India relationship as more important than ever, saying the partnership supports peace, stability and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific.

A major moment for the Indian community

The event at Marvel Stadium is expected to be one of the most visible moments of Modi’s visit.

Australia’s Indian community is one of the country’s fastest-growing and most influential migrant communities, with a strong presence in business, education, health, technology and public life.

For Modi, the Melbourne event will also carry strong symbolic value, offering an opportunity to connect directly with the Indian diaspora and project India’s growing global influence.

Security remains high, but no public alarm

Despite the online threat, authorities have sought to reassure the public that there is no current danger.

The formal warning indicates that police took the matter seriously, while also determining that the situation did not require stronger action after assessment.

Security is still expected to remain tight around Modi’s official engagements, particularly at public events involving large crowds and senior political figures.

Visit expected to proceed as planned

The incident is not expected to change Modi’s official program in Australia.

His meeting with Albanese will focus on strengthening bilateral ties at a time when India is playing an increasingly central role in regional strategy.

For Australia, India is a key democratic partner in the Indo-Pacific. For India, Australia is an important ally, education destination, trade partner and home to a large Indian-origin community.

The online threat has added a security dimension to the visit, but it has not overshadowed the broader diplomatic significance of Modi’s trip.
