REFUGEE WEEK 2026 BEGINS: AUSTRALIA CELEBRATES “A MILLION STORIES”

Communities across the nation reflect on the journeys, resilience and contributions of refugees who have helped shape modern Australia.

Refugee Week 2026 has officially begun across Australia, bringing together communities, schools, local councils and organisations to celebrate the stories of people who have sought safety and built new lives in the country.

This year’s theme, “A Million Stories,” highlights the countless personal journeys behind the refugee experience and the lasting impact those stories have had on Australian society.

Among the first political leaders to mark the occasion was Federal MP Anne Stanley, who used the opening day of Refugee Week to reflect on the importance of recognising the human stories behind migration and refuge.

Today marks the beginning of Refugee Week 2026, a moment to celebrate the million stories behind those seeking refuge,” Stanley said.

Each story is unique. Each one is powerful. And together, they shape the Australia we all call home today.

The Member of Parliament stressed that Refugee Week is about far more than statistics or policy debates.

This is about more than a number. One person’s journey influences the lives of many others: children, grandchildren, and future generations who leave their unique mark on our shared story.

Her message reflects the broader purpose of Refugee Week, which seeks to encourage Australians to better understand the experiences of refugees and acknowledge their contributions to the nation’s cultural, economic and social fabric.

A NATION BUILT ON MANY JOURNEYS

Australia is one of the world’s most multicultural nations, with generations of migrants and refugees helping shape its modern identity.

Over the decades, humanitarian programs have provided refuge to people fleeing war, persecution and conflict from Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East. Many have gone on to establish successful businesses, strengthen local communities and contribute across every sector of Australian life.

The 2026 theme recognises that behind every refugee statistic is an individual story of courage, sacrifice and determination.

REFUGEE WEEK 2026

Running from 14 to 20 June, Refugee Week will feature community events, cultural celebrations, educational programs and public discussions across Australia.

Organisers hope the initiative will encourage Australians to listen, learn and reflect on the experiences of those who have sought protection and a fresh start.

As Anne Stanley noted, the story of one refugee rarely ends with one person.

It continues through families, communities and future generations, becoming part of the larger Australian story itself.
