Conference Notes Vital Role of Italian Language

The annual conference of the Victorian Association of Teachers of Italian (VATI) was held today in Melbourne, marking a key moment for Italian language education in the state of Victoria. Organised with the support of the Consolato Generale d’Italia – Melbourne, the event brought together educators, community leaders, and cultural representatives committed to promoting Italian language and culture across Australia.

The conference highlighted the essential role played by teachers in fostering linguistic and cultural awareness among students. Through their daily efforts, thousands of young people are introduced not only to the Italian language but also to a broader world shaped by art, music, design, and innovation. Speakers emphasized that language education remains a powerful bridge between cultures, strengthening ties between Italy and Australia.

For decades, VATI has served as a cornerstone of this mission. The association provides professional development, resources, and a collaborative network for educators, reinforcing the importance of high-quality teaching in maintaining student engagement. Its work stands as a clear example of how a dedicated professional community can influence both educational outcomes and cultural exchange. A significant moment during the conference was the formal recognition of outgoing president Ferdinando Colarossi.

After more than twenty years of service, Colarossi was praised for his leadership and lasting contribution to the association’s growth and impact. His tenure has been widely credited with strengthening VATI’s presence and expanding opportunities for Italian language programs across Victoria.

The event also marked a transition in leadership, with warm wishes extended to the newly appointed president, Maria Brancolino.
