Two Italians named Citizens of the Year at Canada Bay

The 2025 Citizen of the Year Awards, presented on 26 January 2026, shone a spotlight on two outstanding Italian-Australian community figures whose dedication has left a lasting mark across Sydney’s inner west and sporting landscape.

Natalino “Nat” Bongiorno was named Citizen of the Year, while Santino Grieco received the Sports Citizen of the Year Award.

Recognised for their quiet leadership, tireless volunteerism and unwavering commitment to others, both men exemplify the values of service, solidarity and community spirit that sit at the heart of these prestigious awards.

For many years, Nat Bongiorno has worked behind the scenes to support those facing hardship, often without seeking recognition.

As a founding committee member of the Foundation for A Bloody Great Cause, he has played a pivotal role in supporting the Haematology Clinical Research Unit at Concord Hospital.

Serving as a volunteer committee member, Director and Secretary, Bongiorno’s planning skills and hands-on approach have helped the Foundation raise more than $1.8 million for blood cancer clinical trials, delivering hope and life-saving opportunities to patients and families.

His commitment extends well beyond healthcare.

Bongiorno has been a driving force behind regular feeding programs in Sydney’s CBD and local communities, bringing together volunteers, food suppliers and community partners to ensure people experiencing homelessness receive not only meals, but also dignity and human connection.

A strong advocate for collaboration between business and community, he has also served as Vice President of the Majors Bay Chamber of Commerce for eight years, helping guide its strategic direction and encouraging local businesses to play an active role in community life.

Honoured as Sports Citizen of the Year, Santino Grieco has devoted more than 30 years to grassroots football, ensuring young people can participate in a safe, inclusive and well-run sporting environment.

For more than 25 years, Grieco has served as Secretary of Inter Lions Football Club, earning a reputation as the first to arrive and the last to leave.

His steady presence and meticulous attention to detail have been central to the club’s smooth operation and high standards.

His contribution also spans many years with the Canterbury District Soccer Football Association, where he has volunteered with fairness, integrity and a deep commitment to player wellbeing and development.

Beyond his formal roles, Grieco’s true legacy lies in the lives he has touched.

Through mentoring generations of young players, he has instilled values of respect, teamwork and discipline that extend far beyond the football field.

Together, Bongiorno and Grieco stand as powerful examples of how dedication, compassion and service can strengthen communities and inspire future generations.

Their recognition serves as a reminder that the strength of a community is built by individuals who choose to give their time, skills and energy for the benefit of others.
